Elysium depicts a haunting dystopian future that, in many respects, feels uncomfortably close to our present reality. In an era where rising sea levels have partially or entirely submerged cities such as New York, Melbourne, and Barcelona, the most cutting-edge technology is spearheaded by an interplanetary travel corporation. The stars have been conquered, and now, those who can afford it can escape to a new dimension. Their latest breakthrough in "virtual vacations" involves transferring the user into an imaginary world, meticulously mapped from the passenger’s own conscious and unconscious mind.
The play follows Kelly’s journey as she explores themes of love and family within a blissfully utopian realm. Her narrative stands in stark contrast to that of Georgina, who remains in the "real world" struggling with a heart condition. Her father desperately seeks a remedy in a society where access to healthcare is strictly dictated by purchasing power. Meanwhile, Mark, the company’s chief engineer, grapples with his conscience as he is forced to make a series of decisions that will allow the firm to monopolize a cutthroat, competitive, and highly selective market.
Elysium was showcased at Teatre Romea as part of the 7th Staged Reading Series, organized by AADPC, AISGE Foundation, and Fundació Romea.
The project is currently in development and open to co-production opportunities, as well as proposals from programmers, presenters, and other industry stakeholders.
